The Titanium Allcross frame is the offspring of a Cross Race Frame and a wicked Gravel Grinder. In essence, a quick and nimble joy machine, just at home on technical single track as your weekend urban assault ride.
Designed for a client that specifically wanted a Stainless road bike with "Ritchey Breakaway" style couplers, as his main bike for home and epic travels. As this had never been built, and there are no 17-4ph stainless Ritchey Breakaway couplers, I got the licensure to make them and worked with LocoMachine www.loco-machine.com to reverse engineer the system and make the needed components. As far as I know this is a one of a kind. This bike was built with Columbus XCr tubing, and the major components were made by LocoMachine.
The new owner of the bike, advertising executive Mike Lear, is an aging freerider (his words), and was longing for a bike that could retain some of the characteristics of his past big mountain bikes, but was more suited to the cross-country riding where he lives now, in Virginia. He wanted a simple all mountain trail bike, with XC racing capability. A true collaborator, Stijl Cyles’ president and builder Hinmaton Hisler invited Mike to his shop to pour over geometric configurations and advise him on the implications of things such as a 16.3” chainstay. After some rides on a fit bike, Hinmaton invited Mike to enjoy the fireworks of the brazing process as the bike was put together in his shop. What resulted was a 29”, single-speed, custom fillet-brazed steel framed bike with lightweight components, a slack head angle of 69 degrees for comfort in descents, and a very tight rear triangle for incredible cornering. The bike weighs 20.7lbs with pedals on, ready to ride. And in the words of Mike, “rides like nothing I’ve ever been on in my life.” Responsive, lightning fast handling, goat-like climbing ability and uber confident when descending.
Stijl Cycles is the proud sponsor of the 2011 Design Physics | Stijl Cycles race squad. Working closely with each team member, the designers at Stijl created a series of custom 29'er mountain bikes custom tailored to the racer's desired handling characteristics. The bikes featured fillet brazed steel tube sets, custom machined dropouts, and a custom team paint scheme.
